Marie Claire Korea Interview August 2024

1-

As I mentioned in my previous video content, I heard that you tend to watch too many movies. So I was wondering which movie you liked, but I only saw one movie shared on Instagram. Director Tony K's film < Detachment>. Is it because it is your favorite movie or is it because your memories of that day when you watched the movie are clear?

RW: Latter. When you watch a good movie, it creates a big impact on your heart. It was a film with an unusually powerful impact. I've mentioned this somewhere before, but there is a certain style of film that I prefer. Speaking of movies, these include < Taxi Driver>, <Joker> and < Silver Linings Playbook>. Even though their genres are completely different, I see loneliness as common among the characters in these films, and I love films that bravely deal with these emotions. Among these, I think  Detachment was the one that expressed the emotions most clearly. That's why I shared it on Instagram, but when you look at my Instagram profile, you will understand that I don't actually make many movie recommendations.

2-Why? It's fun to look at someone else's taste in movies, maybe I can find my own taste in movies.

RW: I think my Instagram account is viewed by a lot of fans, and I thought that if I only shared movies I liked, my tastes might unintentionally influence other people. For example, if someone asked me, "Do you like these kinds of movies/feelings?" "I will try to understand this." After hearing this, I thought I should be more careful and not give careless advice. There are many great movies in the world, but it would be a shame to miss out on something that is truly yours because you seek out someone else's taste. Actually, there are so many movies I want to recommend, but I'm holding myself back.

3- On the other hand, wouldn't that be nice? (Laughs) Since you said you wouldn't recommend it, I started to wonder about the other movies you would recommend. RW: (Laughs) There is an animation called ‹Blue Giant> that talks about jazz. It describes the development of students who dream of becoming musicians. In some ways it feels like an obvious story, but the directing was so good that I was completely immersed in it. The music is also really good. Check it out while drinking beer. I also recently watched director Lars Von Trier's film < The House That Jack Built> and it was fun to interpret the various predictions.

4-When you watch a good movie, do you evaluate it with the mind of an audience or with the heart of an actor? RW: There is something like this. When I was in high school, all of my friends liked movies, so we would watch them together whenever we had time. While watching, I asked "How was this scene shot?" | thought. "Is this scene shot under the director's instructions or with the actor's interpretation?" Or "Why is this part shown for so long?" | kept thinking and then my friends said "Oh, just watch the movie!" (Laughs) Just enjoy the movie." What they said was true. 5-Is it okay if it doesn't bother you the way you watch it? RW: This doesn't bother me. I don't watch all the movies in pieces like this. 6-Do you also watch the TV series' you appear in? RW: It comes to my mind while I'm drinking something and I turn it on and watch it, but it takes some courage to watch it. 7-Why do you feel have to turn it on and watch? RW: I watch because I'm curious. I usually watch it before I start shooting for a new series. Starting a drama is always a little difficult at first. I have a lot of thoughts, concerns, and then I think like this. "What did I do then?" And so l start watching. 8-You are currently shooting a new series. Did you watch the previous series before you started shooting this series? RW: I also watched The Matchmakers and Destined With You. But this time it was difficult because I couldn't reach anything. As I became more honest with myself, I let go more and just thought about this. Instead of studying as if you were studying, I wanted to trust my intuition for once

9-Do you tend to analyze as if you were studying? RW: Yes, that's what I was doing. I would read the script many times and study hard enough to memorize other people's lines as well. However, even if I did so in this new series, I could not feel a certain atmosphere and it was not clearly drawn. That's why I decided to trust the director and actors I worked with, and this made me feel very comfortable. This was a new approach for me and it was fun too. That's why I look forward to the shooting every day. 10-It is safe to say that a new chapter has opened. RW: It's too much to say it that way. (Laughs) I guess I think of it as positive encouragement and good development. 11-Can you give me more information about the subject you mentioned in the previous question, which is fun? (?) RW: While the director was watching the monitor, he asks, "How was it?" Then someone asks "This is how I did it, how was it?" If you say "That's how I did it?" They also ask "Is this true?" Then "I'll try again." you say and the Director says, "That's okay too." This process is very fun. When you share with the other actor something that is not in the other actor's script but suddenly comes to your mind, this comes out because you love each other's characters. This creates a nice environment. This is thanks to our love for the characters. (?) 12-The moment when my goodness and your goodness come together in a world where there are no right answers? RW: Yes. Everything is uncertain. No matter how hard you work all night, the result is not guaranteed, even if it is a famous director or a famous actor. So you have to enjoy that uncertainty. The only thing I can do is to get along well with the people on set, and to prepare my acting without feeling guilty or embarrassed when I look at those people. I look forward to the energy that emerges in that moment. (?) it means we were confused and didn't understand exactly what they were saying.

13-Can you describe a moment or scene in your past work where this energy was expressed? RW: There is one scene that still remains in my memory. In the 22nd episode of Extraordinary You, Dan Oh wanted to see a night sky full of stars before she died. For this, Haru prepared a night sky environment with a curtain accompanied by stars and presented it as a gift to Dan Oh. While performing on that stage, I felt my heart was sad, but I didn't want Dan Oh to see me crying either. For a moment, I felt like Haru was going to do this, and then that scene finally came out. There was a moment when I realized that these were emotions that a certain character instinctively brought out. 14-On the other hand, scenes where you cry come to my mind. (Laughs) You are an actor who had a lot of crying scenes in the TV series ‹Extraordinary You>, ‹Tomorrow> and <Destined With You>. RW: Yes, there is a scene where I cried a lot. I think directors always want to make me cry. I don't know why they did this. (Laughs) But I think I will have more crying scenes in the future. 15-What kind of energy do you want to be a person who has outside of acting? how do you want to exist in a world where there are no other right answers, even outside of movies and TV series? P.S: Here, in the first sentence, he refers to his answer to Question 12. RW: Just as everything in acting is not a hundred percent reliable, there is nothing we are completely sure of, nor is there anything l am a hundred percent sure about, either about myself, my own development, or knowing myself. However, I am confident about the direction I want to pursue in the future. It is better for you to be full than for me to be full, and I want to be a person who feels happy by sharing generously without regret even if I give my whole heart. A person who truly embraces and loves. It may be a bit obvious and ambiguous, but I think this is a good way to live.
